Carnegie Classifications

The Carnegie Classifications are the leading way to identify and categorize institutional diversity in higher education. UCCS had been categorized as a master's large (basic) until 2018 when the number of doctoral degrees and the amount of research funds met the criteria to be an "R2" or doctoral university with high research activity. The classifications reflect the 2021 update to be released in January 2022.

Level: 4-year or above
Control: Public
Basic: Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity (R2)
Undergraduate Instructional Program: Balanced arts & sciences/professions, some graduate coexistence
Graduate Instructional Program: Research Doctoral: STEM-dominant
Enrollment Profile: High undergraduate
Undergraduate Profile: Four-year, medium full-time, inclusive, lower transfer-in
Size and Setting: Four-year, medium, primarily nonresidential

Note: UCCS intends to apply for the elective Community Engagement Classification in the next cycle scheduled for 2024.

Approved Peer Institutions

Peer institutions are used for comparative data analyses. Approved by the UCCS administration, the President's Office, and the Board of Regents, the peer institutions are selected based on factors such as student population, city population, type of institution, and academic programs. The name of the institution is preceded by its basic 2018 Carnegie Classification (R1 -- doctoral universities with very high research activity, R2 -- doctoral universities with high research activity, D/PU -- doctoral/professional universities, M1 -- larger master's colleges and universities, etc). The IPEDS Data Feedback Report (DFR) is listed for each peer institution. More information is posted online at Carnegie Classifications.
